The Van der Poel Sharity Fund was founded on the 1st of October 2004 by ir. A.P.M. van der Poel and his wife M.C. van der Poel-Boekema.

Arthur van der Poel was born in Hoorn, the Netherlands, in 1948, and is a graduate of Eindhoven University of Technology. He first joined the R&D lab of the Dutch PTT, then worked for the International Telecommunication Union in Indonesia, before moving to Philips in 1984.

Within Philips Semiconductors he held various marketing and management positions, and became CEO of Philips Semiconductors and a member of the Philips Group Management Committee in March 1996.

In May 1998 he was also appointed to the Board of Management of Royal Philips Electronics. Arthur van der Poel remained a member of the Group Management Committee until his retirement from Philips on 1 April 2004.

“Since his retirement from Philips, he was active in supervisory roles at the companies ASML, Royal HaskoningDHV, Gemalto and Vanderlande Industries. He is currently chairman of the Supervisory Board of Signify (the former Philips Lighting) and BDR Thermea”.
